Assigning IP Camera Passwords

In an effort to increase security, Digital Watchdog requires a password assignment when connecting to a DW MEGApix IP Camera for the first time.

If a new password is not set, users will not be able to view video streams.  This article will explain how to assign a password to DW MEGApix cameras.

Supported/Affected Devices:

  • MEGApix IP Camera Series

Requirements

Using DW IP Finder

DW IP Finder features a Bulk Password Assignment feature that allows users to simultaneously assign an administrator login to multiple cameras.

Note:  DW BlackJack (Windows OS) servers should already have DW IP Finder installed. If you need to update or install DW IP Finder, you can acquire the latest version from the DW IP Finder product page, under the Software tab.

To set up a password for a new camera using DW IP Finder:

  1. Open the DW IP Finder tool.
  1. Use the drop-down box on the left, under Network, to select the subnetwork of the camera.  Click Scan Devices to prompt DW IP Finder to detect the cameras.

Note:  Scan wait time varies depending on the number of devices that are connected to the network.  Unchecking the Thumbnail box before scanning will reduce the wait time.

  1. Check the box next to the camera that you are assigning a new password to.  Multiple cameras can be selected at the same time.  The selected cameras will all be assigned the same login if selected at the same time.
  1. Click Bulk Password Assignment.  A pop-up window will display.

  1. In the pop-up window, enter the current Username and Password of the camera under Current Account.  If it is a new or defaulted camera, use:
    • Default Username:  admin
    • Default Password:  admin
  1. Enter the new password in the New box and the Confirm box under New Password.  You may enter an optional Password Hint.
    • Password requirement:  minimum 8 characters with at least three combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  1. Click Change to save and apply the login changes.

Using Web Viewer

Once the camera’s network settings has been set up, you can access the camera’s Web Viewer to change the camera’s login settings.

To change the camera’s password using Web Viewer:

  1. Open a web browser and enter the camera’s IP Address in the address bar to connect with the camera’s Web Viewer.
    • If you do not know the camera’s IP Address, IP Finder can be used to scan the network for connected cameras.
    • By default, cameras use DHCP and start with an IP Address of 192.168.1.80.  Please see the product manual for setup information.
  1.  When initially connecting, you are prompted with a camera login pop-up.  If you have not yet set up a new Username and Password using DW IP Finder, use:
  • Default Username:  admin
  • Default Password:  admin
  1. A message will prompt you to set up a new password for the camera.  Click Change Password.  A pop-up window will display.
  • Until a password is assigned, camera video will not display in Web Viewer.

  1. In the pop-up window, enter the new Password in the Password box and Retype Password box.  You may enter an optional Password Hint.
    • Password requirement:  minimum 8 characters with at least three combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

  1. Click Change Password to save and apply the login changes.

Note:  If you are using DW Spectrum IPVMS to monitor the cameras, please read Configuring Device Authentication to configure the device authentication settings.
