License Plate Recognition

Digital Watchdog’s Ai analytic tools can be used to detect and identify vehicle license plates, cataloging them in DW Spectrum. Additionally, the system’s Event Rules feature can be configured to send notification messages by email, DW Spectrum Mobile app, and bookmark footage related to the detection.

This article will outline how to create an Event Rule in DW Spectrum that will send a notification message for license plate detection.

**NOTE:  The email server must be configured for your DW Spectrum System for event rule notifications to send via email. For setup information, you may refer to DW Spectrum – Email Server Setup.

Creating Event Rules

If you want to receive a push notification, email, or bookmark when a specific license plate is detected, you can configure an Event Rule to do so.

For Specific License Plate Detection (Caption Contains)

If you want to receive notifications when a specific plate is read by the Ai analytic engine, create an event rule using the “Caption Contains” setting.

To create a notification event rule for a specific license plate:

  1. Using the DW Spectrum Client, open the System Administration menu (CTRL+ALT+A) and open the Event Rules menu.

  1. Click the +Add button to create a new event rule.

Configure the Event section as follows:

  • When – select “Analytics Event”.
  • At – select the DW MEGApix Ai camera for license plate detection.
  • Event Type – select “Plate Number”
  • Caption Contains – enter the license plate number of the vehicle in question.
  • Comments – [optional] enter any comments or notes regarding the target vehicle.

  1. Configure the Action section as follows:
  • Do – select the preferred method of notification (email notification, mobile notification, etc.).
  • To – select the recipients of the notification.

  1. When finished click the Apply button to save the event rule.

The result of the event rule will yield notifications and a log of the specific license plate.

  • Events in Red represent recorded video available for viewing.
  • Events in White represent a logged event, but no video is available.

For Allowed/Denied License Plate Detection (Description Contains)

In addition to logging when a specific license plate has been detected through an event rule, DW Spectrum can be set up to respond when a plate is identified belonging to either an allow list or deny list from the camera.

Configure the deny/allow lists in the camera’s web client to have the ANPR analytic engine flag when specific license plates are detected.

When creating the event rule, enter “allow”, “deny”, or “other” into the Description Contains field to be notified if a license plate is on the allow or deny list.

This will result in the system logging when a license plate that matches the specified plate number in the camera’s allow or deny list.
