Digital Watchdog Analytic Products

Over the course of several years, Digital Watchdog has worked at developing and releasing products that have been integrated with intelligent analytic technologies. It is believed that by combining the two, DW security solutions can become more convenient and user-friendly when implemented appropriately.

An example deployment of these products may appear as a camera installation that overlooks a courtyard to detect when a vehicle has been loitering in a no-parking zone and to track pedestrian movements. Or it might look like a camera that has been set up to monitor an exclusion zone and use zone detection to notify security personnel when someone enters the specified area.

As this frontier of security solutions continues to progress at an increasingly expeditious rate, customer desires to modernize their surveillance systems continues to grow. As such, DW wants to match this interest with advancing its own products to provide a variety of options.

Comparing IVA and Ai Solutions

At the time of this writing, Digital Watchdog’s two primary analytic product lines include the MEGApix IVA series and the Blackjack/MEGApix Ai series. While these two product lines both feature video analytics, there are some differences that are worth knowing about.

DW MEGApix IVA Series

A primary feature of MEGApix IVA cameras is the built-in analytic plugin which relies upon detecting pixel changes within the scene. This product series may be useful for basic deployments where enhanced motion tracking is desired. There are various analytic options available to set up including drawing regions of interest, exclusion zones, line-crossing rules, and tally counting. However, the IVA series may not be the best option for all situations.

Video Motion Detection is reliant upon detection of pixel changes, which can be prone to false alarms – like detecting shadows or foliage and classifying them as objects of interest. Pixel detection has difficulty discerning between a person or a shadow and will often trigger false-events due to the inability to recognize the differences between ambient/environmental activity and actual people and objects.

Users must also calibrate the camera to notate where the height and angle of the device is physically positioned, as well as defining object classifications. This can often be time consuming and relies on pixel adjustments, which can be prone to incorrect object identification.

While it is still a useful technology, analytics that depend on motion detection and pixel change detection has become a legacy technology that has begun to be outpaced by modern intelligent analytics.

DW MEGApix Ai and DW Blackjack Ai Series

DW MEGApix Ai and DW Blackjack Ai is the next generation of video analytics that has been produced by Digital Watchdog. This updated analytic engine utilizes “Deep Learning” (DL) technology to automatically familiarize itself with the scene.

The Ai engine can come in either MEGApix IP camera form or on a dedicated DW Blackjack Ai server. This updated analytic engine has shown marked improvement in reducing false alarms, is easier to set up, and has increased accuracy in determining object classification.

The reduction in false alarms is largely due to the Ai engine’s ability to filter out unnecessary movement detection within the ambient environment such as moving foliage, shadows, birds, etc. Because the technology uses Deep Learning (DL), the analytic engine familiarizes itself with the scene being observed and begins to understand how tracked objects and the environment appears from the camera’s vantage point, completely removing the need to manually calibrate the camera.

Overall, the Ai engine is a huge improvement over the traditional motion detection methods of previous analytic technologies.

Ai Edge Cameras and Ai Servers

The Ai engine comes in the form of either a DW MEGApix Ai camera or a DW Blackjack Ai server. The two forms both use the same technology, reduce false alarms, show an increase in analytic efficiency, and cost less than its predecessor, the MEGApix IVA series.

Some of the notable details for these two forms include:

DW MEGApix Ai Cameras

  • Edge-based solution.
  • Analytic license comes with the camera.
  • Detects objects and runs analytics within the camera.
  • No additional hardware is required; is ready for integration with your IPVMS.
  • No special calibration or pre-setup is needed.
  • Includes special camera models like ANPR (Automated Number Plate Reader) or MMCR (Make, Model, Color, car type Recognition).

DW Blackjack Ai Servers

  • Server-based solution.
  • Purpose-built option, specifically built for integration of DW Spectrum IPVMS and the DW Ai Analytic Engine.
  • All-in-one NVR for camera recording needs.
  • One-time license purchase.
  • Scalable design to meet demands to continuously grow system size over time.
  • Allows the DW Ai analytics to be applied to video streams from non-analytic cameras.
  • Cost-effective solution for actionable intelligent analytics.
