Adjusting DW Blackjack® BIOS for Auto-Restart

DW Blackjack® Auto-Restart Function

By default, DW Blackjack® Servers are set to use an automatic restart feature through the computer’s BIOS settings.  This feature is implemented to our products with the intention of creating convenience for our customers during the event of local power loss.  When a location loses power, DW Blackjack units are designed to automatically start and boot upon power returning.  This is ideal as it reduces the level of hands-on management that is required in the upkeep of a DW Spectrum Server.

This article will outline how to access the BIOS of a DW Blackjack unit and adjust the settings to have the unit automatically start following a power outage.

**NOTE:  Depending on the hardware model, DW Blackjack units that are using an Ubuntu Linux OS are nearly identical to units using a Windows OS.  However, depending on the computer’s configuration, some computers will have the “Fast Boot” BIOS option enabled, disabling boot menu prompts from displaying.  However, you should still be able to access the BIOS.

Supported/Affected Devices:

  • DW Blackjack Server Series

Enabling the Auto-Reboot Setting

To set up and enable an automatic system reboot for Windows following power loss:

  1. Power on the computer by pressing the power button that is on the front panel of the unit.

For a WINDOWS system, prompt the BIOS by pressing the “DEL” or “F1” key on the keyboard as the unit is beginning to power.

For a LINUX system, prompt the BIOS by pressing the “F2” or “F12” key on the keyboard as the unit is beginning to power.

**NOTE:  If the system that is being used uses a different key to prompt the BIOS, this information will display onscreen as the unit boots.

You will be prompted to enter the System Administrator password to the unit.  If this is a DW Blackjack unit, use one of the following defaults:

    • Default Password – Dw5pectrum

**NOTE:  For older DW Blackjack units purchased prior to June 18, 2021, the previously utilized default Linux OS login was “admin/admin”

  1. In the BIOS menu, look under the “Advanced” menu tab and locate the setting that may be labeled as:
    • Restore AC/Power Loss
    • Power-On after Power-Fail
    • AC Power Recovery

**NOTE:  Depending on the hardware, the Advanced settings may alternatively display as “ACPI” or “Power Management Setup”.

  1. Set the Restore on AC/Power Loss setting to “Power On

For DW Blackjack Tower/mid-tower models, the “Restore after AC Power Loss” setting can be found in Settings > Advanced > Power Management Setup

  1. Once you have enabled the setting, save and exit from the BIOS settings.

The computer should automatically turn on when power input is introduced to the unit following a powered-down state.
