What is Reserved Disk Space?

By default, DW Spectrum will reserve free space within each local disk and attached NAS drive to store video recordings of the Server’s connected cameras.

However, to ensure that camera video can be archived at any given time, DW Spectrum will overwrite the oldest footage in the archive with new data when the Free Space of the disk drops below the assigned Reserved Space setting.

This article will outline how to adjust the Reserved Space setting for a DW Spectrum Server, using a web browser.

Default Reserved Space Size

  • v2.6 and earlier: 5 GB for each local drive, 50 GB for each NAS on a DW Spectrum Server.
  • v3.0 and up: 10 – 30 GB for each local drive, 50 – 100 GB at each NAS on a DW Spectrum Server.

Note:  Reserved Space is set no greater than 10% of a drive’s total size.

Changing the Reserved Space

Some users might want to reasonably change the size of reserved space because of some user's requirements and need to keep larger space for longer retention days. In DW Spectrum, this can be configured via the following steps:

  1. Open a web browser (Chrome, Opera, or Safari is recommended)
  1. Enter the URL (structure listed below) for the Server’s Advanced Server Settings.

URL Structure:  http://<server_ip_address >:<port>/static/index.html#/advanced

Note:  Default port value is 7001

  1. Login as admin, and navigate to the Storage section.
  2. Change the Reserved Space values as needed.

Note:  The greater that the Reserved Space setting is set to, the more Free Space can be used before the archive begins to overwrite.

  1. Click Save to apply the changes.
