User Session Time Limit

Does your DW Spectrum Client keep getting automatically disconnected from your DW Spectrum System at regular intervals? This is likely due to the session time limit setting of the server.

By default, each user is given a token that lasts 30-days with which their DW Spectrum Client session can remain connected with the DW Spectrum Server. Once this period of time has passed, all DW Spectrum user sessions will automatically close regardless of user activity level or interaction status within the application. This feature was introduced with the release of DW Spectrum version 5.0 in an effort to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the DW Spectrum System by exploiting unattended devices.

While it is not recommended to completely disable this setting, system administrators can deactivate the session timeout or adjust the amount of time that is provided.

This article will outline where you can find the settings for managing automatic system timeouts in the DW Spectrum Client desktop application and web client.

**NOTE:  It is recommended that the DW Spectrum System is updated to use version 5.0.0.35745 or newer to ensure that the cumulative fixes and feature improvements are applied. If your DW Spectrum Server is using an older version, it may be in your best interest to update to the most recent version of the software.

Automatic Session Timeout

The automatic session timeout limit setting can be managed by system administrators using either the DW Spectrum Client desktop application or through the web client.

Using DW Spectrum Client Desktop Application

To adjust the session timeout limit with the desktop client:

  1. Using the Owner (admin) profile or with an Administrator user role, log in to the DW Spectrum System with DW Spectrum Client.

Open the Main menu, select System Administration (Ctrl+Alt+A) and click on the Security tab.

  1. In the User Activity section, configure the Limit session duration setting as needed.
    • Limit Session Duration – enable (check) this setting to activate automatic session timeouts; activated by default.
    • Timeout Length – set a timeout length of up to 99 days, minutes or hours; initially set for 30-days by default.

**NOTE:  Completely disabling the session limit setting may offer opportunity for unwanted access to your DW Spectrum System. It is recommended to keep the Limit session duration setting enabled.

  1. Click the Apply button to save the changes and click “OK” to close the System Administration menu.

Using DW Spectrum Web Portal

To adjust the session timeout limit with the web client:

  1. Connect with the DW Spectrum Server’s web page using a web browser by entering the server’s IP address and Port number (default 700 in the address bar.
  • For example – https://192.168.1.100:7001

Alternatively, right-click on the Server in the Resource panel and select “Server Web Page”.

  1. Log in to the system and select the Settings tab.

In the Security section, configure the Limit session duration setting as needed.

    • Limit Session Duration – enable (check) this setting to activate automatic session timeouts; activated by default.
    • Timeout Length – set a timeout length of up to 99 days, minutes, or hours; initially set for 30-days by default.

**NOTE:  Completely disabling the session limit setting may offer opportunity for unwanted access to your DW Spectrum System. It is recommended to keep the Limit session duration setting enabled.

  1. Click the Save button to apply the changes.

This completes how to adjust the user session duration limit settings of a DW Spectrum System.
