Soft Triggers

A “Soft Trigger” is a DW Spectrum feature that can be configured for manual activation of an Event Rule by a user. Soft Triggers are represented in the DW Spectrum Client as a clickable button when viewing a specified camera. It can be used to activate notifications, HTTP requests, trigger a series of Event Rules, or other system actions.

Only one action per rule can be activated by a Soft Trigger. However, multiple event rules can be triggered in response to each other.

This article will outline how to create and use a soft trigger using the DW Spectrum Client application.

What is a Soft Trigger?

This event type adds a button to one or more devices in layout. When a User clicks on a soft trigger button, the associated action is triggered. The event can be instant (triggers when the button is clicked), or continuous (triggers as long as the button is held).

Soft trigger buttons appear as a circular overlay in the lower-right region of an item and will display the contents of the rule’s Name field when the mouse cursor is hovered over it.

Soft Triggers have many beneficial uses, including, but not limited to:

  • Increased granular operator control – examples include having a PTZ camera move to a specific preset, create a bookmark, trigger an audio file to broadcast, etc.
  • Integration of third-party systems and devices – using HTTP-Request-as-an-Action, a soft trigger can be used to signal to external devices.
  • Deployment of multi-action events in DW Spectrum – using the API, integrators can create multi-action events. For example, when combined with an access control system, using a soft trigger could unlock all exit doors in a disaster event, ensuring all egress points are clear.

Creating a Soft Trigger

To create a Soft Trigger rule:

  1. In DW Spectrum Client, open the Main Menu and open the System Administration menu.

Select “Event Rules”.

  1. In the Event Rules menu, click the +Add button to create a new Event Rule.

In the Event section, configure the following:

  • When – select “Soft Trigger”.
  • At: choose which cameras you would like this button to appear on while viewing.
  • Available to: select the users who will be able to see and use the Soft Trigger button.
  • Name: enter a name for the Soft Trigger. This label will appear when hovering the mouse over the button.
  • Icon: select an icon for the button.
  • Schedule: by default, the new Event Rule will allow the Soft Trigger to be used at any time. If needed, you can schedule specific day(s) and time(s) for when the button will be available to use.

  1. In the Action section, select the resulting action that you would like executed when the Soft Trigger button is pressed.

Click Apply and Save.

  1. When viewing any cameras that were designated for the Soft Trigger rule, a button with your specifications will display in the bottom-right of the viewing window.

Clicking the Soft Trigger button will result in what was specified for the “Action” of the rule.
