Preserving Bookmarks
As part of the way that DW Spectrum manages storage by default, archives are overwritten to continuously record video once the media storage has been filled. Despite this, administrators can preserve bookmarks beyond the retention period of the Main data storage by utilizing the Backup feature of DW Spectrum.
Prerequisites
To ensure the preservation of bookmarks, it is vital to have a designated backup storage drive selected. For smaller systems, creating a dedicated storage partition to split a storage drive might be a suitable option, if the write/record speed and capacity of the drive is sufficient.
The capacity of the designated drive or partition should be at least 10% of the size of the largest drive in the system, with a maximum capacity of 50 GB. For example, if a user has a 10TB storage drive enabled for the DW Spectrum Server, any other drives with less than a 1TB capacity will be ineligible for server storage.
Configuration Setup
To configure a backup storage location for bookmarks:
- Right-click on the Server in the Resource Tree, select “Server Settings”, then select the “Storage Management” tab.
- In the Reserved column, select the “Backup” storage type for the desired storage drive.
Click the Apply button to save any changes that have been made.
- Click on the “Backup” tab and select the applicable cameras and related settings for the backup storage.
- Under the What to backup column, select “Bookmarks” then click the Apply button to save any changes that have been made.
**NOTE: Be aware that if you have set a specific retention time in the Camera Settings menu, under the Recording tab, the backup period for both the Main storage and Backup storage will be identical. However, if you have not set a maximum retention time for the Main storage, and if the data rotates/overwrites once it reaches the maximum drive capacity, the same principle applies to the Backup storage. It is possible for the retention time of the Backup storage to be significantly longer than that of the Main storage, depending on the total capacity of the Backup storage and size of the bookmarked events.
